Bridging the Borders

With the world so caught up in our political problems, it’s hard to see anyone making any time for anything else, to think of anyone else. Three boys from the future generation that has been labeled as “selfish” have taken the initiative to go in and start something that’s bigger then themselves. Yeohoon Youn, Lucian Wulf, and Jared Vallian put the spot light on Mexico in a much softer sense than what its been receiving from Trump and the media with controversy on the wall.
“At first it was just an idea that Lucian had wanted to do for a while,” says head coordinator Yeohoon Youn. “Then we tried it but at first we kind of just kept pushing it off; then, in January, we took the first step and just asked people. When we got all the clothes we were like, “Now we have to do this no matter what.””
They’re project is known as D.C.M. or Donating Clothes to Mexico, planning on collecting all the clothing/miscellaneous items that they can before they hit the road.  So far, having 25 trash bags full, they’re looking to have a pretty good foundation built for their project, and they’ll continue to collect clothes until the day before they leave.
With Mexico holding a high poverty rate of 42%, it’s reasonable as to why they would’ve picked this country, but we still hold a decent poverty rate in our own country being at 14%, so I was curious as to why they would have chosen a different country when we have people to take care of in our own. “There are already a lot of places that donate to people in our community,” Yeohoon replied. “But you rarely hear people donating to Mexico besides churches and other small organizations!” Not being fully sure of where they’re exactly going yet Yeohoon informed me saying, “We are not sure yet. Most likely Nogales, but we’re meeting with Apple Tree Church next week (2/26/17-3/4/17) and they are giving us some information and locations of churches we can stop by in Mexico!” Taking the time out of their last spring break in high school to go down and carry this out with Camilla Ibarra coming along to translate and help them find a van to travel in, there’s nothing stopping them at this point, nothing that they’ll let stop them.
Could this be the next big media trend or just a fun senior project? It’s hard to say with things such as this, they are even sure themselves telling me, “We are not sure yet. Lucian has told us a few times that if this goes well we can do it every year, but change the location every time!” Since a recording of the whole trip will be made and posted to various websites, proving to and hopefully inspiring the world to spread a little love, and give to those who aren’t as blessed as them.
