Artist Spotlight: Eli Salazar

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

Eli Salazar catches moments with paint.  Her artwork looks like she just took a picture by her specialty, blending and mixing colors.  The current senior, Eli, is inspired by three of her favorite artists: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. She was inspired by these artists because of the many different ways of making their art. For example, Claude Monet uses impressionism techniques while Pablo Picasso uses abstract techniques. She likes how they set a mood depending on the painting. Monet uses impressionism to paint water lilies and it would set a mood of relaxation. Pablo Picasso uses abstract techniques in”The Weeping Women” which sets a mood of fear and sadness, since it was painted to protest when Guernica was being bombed.  For her, art is like a motivation to keep doing things, as she says that when she finishes a piece of art she is motivated to start another.  Eli Salazar is a firm believer that art helps many people, only because it has helped her in many ways, including relief from the stress of emotions she has built up over time.  There was a time in her life where she felt trapped and did not know what to do. In Eli’s sophomore year of high school she went through a lot with her ex-boyfriend and wanted to find a way to express that. Which was when she turned to painting, this is one of the bigger reasons as to why she sees art as a form of therapy.                            Some advice Eli Salazar would like to give to many starting artists is that you should “Practice your technique, and, just because you feel like you are not good, it does not mean you should stop. No one sucks at art, it takes time and effort. Some people are born with the ability to do it amazingly and some people just need some extra time and that’s okay.”

One of Eli’s favorite quotes from Van Gogh is “Art is to console those who are broken by life.”
