Victor Quinonez, a senior from El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, recorded on his phone a video of his U.S. Government teacher, Gregory Salcido, ranting about the military and insulting the intelligence of servicemen. On January 26th, a family friend posted the videos on Facebook, asking people to help her make them go viral. As of now, the video has been viewed more than 6 million times.

Victor has told everyone that he recorded his teacher because he was tired of hearing negative remarks about the military. This is a very common thing for this student, his government teacher picks on him daily for his family tradition of joining the service. This teacher has a history of problems with students, for example he had been placed on administrative leave in 2012 for smacking a 15- year old boy on the back of the head during class to wake him up.

The reaction Victor Quinonez’s father’s response to the teacher’s remarks was, “It’s not… about freedom of speech. That’s fine, he can say what he wants, but to say it to the youth is wrong. To bully my son is wrong, to discriminate against people who want to be in the military is wrong.”

This teacher has made several remarks towards other students who bring up joining the service or have worn things with military logos showing their support.

Below are a few of the remarks the teacher made toward students who wanted to join the service after high school:

“If you join the military, it’s because you have no other options,” Salcido said.

“Your freakin’ stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They’re dumb- – -ts. They’re not high-level bankers. They’re not academic people. They’re not intellectual people.”

“They’re the freaking lowest of our low.”

What prompted the teacher’s harsh reaction was a student wearing a Marine Corps shirt. When he saw this, the teacher told the young boy he could not wear that shirt to his class ever again.

The council on Monday issued a statement that was signed by the mayor and three other council members that they do not agree with Salcedo’s negative comments towards people in the service, and the El Rancho Unified School District board president Aurora R. Villon told the times that Salcedo’s negative comments did not reflect the city’s values either.
