Joaquin Cota is a band nerd, and proud of it. Ever since freshman year, he has been involved in Fine Arts, specifically band. He joined the band freshman year and his love for being part of the community has only grown since then.

Sophomore year Joaquin wanted to become more involved in the music. He excitedly signed up for marching band and became fully committed to the activity, making music with choreographed movements to go along with the music. He traveled to all of the football away games to spread Cougar Pride. As the season came to a close, he didn’t want the season to end, so he made the choice to join drumline.

Drumline is usually a winter and spring sport that consists of a group of indoor percussion players. It includes snare drum, bass drum, tenor drum, cymbal, and other forms of percussion. Cota became a member of the pit (the bell part of the drumline) which includes mallet instruments like marimba, vibraphone, bells, and xylophone, after having to adopt a new instrument that fit well inside of the giant percussion.  Cota and the members in the club practice in the morning during zero period and after school on Thursdays.

Drumline is like every other sport, they take part in competitions – right now our Sahuaro Drumline is preparing for Regionals, where they compete against other schools. Cota says, “I’m excited for State because I want to see how our work compares to other schools and what the other schools bring.”

Overall the band program at Sahuaro has a lot to offer, no matter what you are interested in there is always a fit. The Marching Band is in need for new members for the fall season and you can never have too many instruments making beautiful music in the band.
