On March 7, multiple exotic animals disappeared from a Florida wildlife sanctuary after a fake ad was posted on Craigslist to sell them to the public. Early on Sunday morning, someone snuck in and stole the animals, driving a truck to the back gate of the We Care Wild Life Sanctuary in Miami; they loaded up seven ring-tailed lemurs, five marmosets, four monkeys. seven birds, and thirteen tortoises. There was a post online, supposedly from the thieves, about the stolen animals, but they turned out to be fake. The sanctuary is frantically trying to retrieve their animals out of fear that the animals could die from lack of food and appropriate medicine. Some of the staff claim that the animals may suffer from heart attacks due to the high stress. The thieves stole the most expensive creatures, causing the staff to suspect that they knew what they were doing; all of those animals put together would cost several thousand dollars. They left all the horses, raccoons, and the goats, and they left some valuable birds that were nesting, most likely due to the fact that they were not visible in the darkness. The police say that this was an inside job because they hacked into their Facebook to post the craigslist ad. The thieves broke the bolts to get in through a gate instead of breaking in, and all of the security cameras were down. It is unclear whether or not the animals will be returned.
