Calvin Nguyen, captain of Boys Tennis,  is proud of how the tennis team has come together this year under Coach Lawwill, who he credits with helping to give them the motivation to push through. This is Coach Lawwill’s first year, taking over for Coach Riggleman who resigned at the end of last year’s season.  Nguyen states of the difference, “He pushes us harder – makes us work as a team instead of separately.”

In his opinion, their best match this season was against Ironwood Ridge, where they won by one point. This was a big victory for Sahuaro because they have lost multiple times against Ironwood Ridge, so they were really excited to win against them for the first time this season.

Calvin believes that what made them start losing in past years was their lack of motivation.  In fact, the team only won one match all of last season, so with morale low, they started giving up because losing almost all of their games was disappointing. They lost their final match against Flowing Wells, 6-3 and ended the season with six wins and eight losses.  Seniors, Jaelon Moore and Sebastian Kanizsai had high hopes of making it to State, but were proud of how far the team had come.

Coach Lawwill says, “This season they have been more competitive than the boys tennis team has ever been.” He is very happy that the team is showing good effort, and overall he thinks that they did an awesome job. Nguyen stated, “It feels good. We went out with big improvements from past years – especially us seniors.”
