April 20th, 1999 was the day schooling would change forever – the first school shooting in Colombine High School left 13 students dead in Littleton, Colorado.

The latest school massacre occurred on February 14th, 2018 in Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 students and injuring 17 more. And that was when students around the U.S.came to a tipping point and started bringing attention to the major problem all schools are facing.

April 20th, 2018 marked the 19th anniversary of Columbine, and, according to the national walkout site, 2,600 schools walked out in every state nationwide, taking part of national walkout day, protesting gun violence and what schools are doing to prevent future deadly shootings, along with remembering the ones lost in the Columbine shooting, and supporting Columbine High School, as they shut down the school in remembrance.

“We have been practicing school lockdowns since kindergarten,” Arielle Geismar, 16, a junior at Beacon High School shouted. “If we are old enough to be affected by gun violence, then you’re damn well sure we are old enough to have an opinion about it!”

All of the walkouts had the different approaches to solve the same problem, each walkout had a different subject to raise awareness to school safety.

Jennifer DeJulio, a history and social studies teacher at Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield said, “You teach these kids about ways people have worked to change our country. And now, watching them working to make change is amazing.”

Many students faced potential consequences to walking out on this memorable day, but students are done with being afraid in a place to learn.
