Kehlani Faces Hate for Pregnancy

Kehlani is a singer, songwriter, and dancer also known as “The Princess of R&B”. She is most known for the feature on Cardi B’s new album “Invasion of Privacy” with the song “Ring”. Kehlani came out to the world as queer (an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities who are not heterosexual or cisgender) after pulling Demi Lovato in for an onstage kiss to clarify her sexuality to curious fans. She made the announcement after years of public speculation and media reports labeling her as bisexual or a lesbian on April 22nd, 2018 over Twitter.

She took to Instagram on October 12th, months after coming out, and announced her pregnancy.

The singer said on Instagram: “I’ve always been very open with you all about my personal adventures & accomplishments… This was the HARDEST to hide. If you know me, you know I’ve dreamed about motherhood since I was very young. When asked what my goals are, it’s always the idea of a big healthy happy family & whatever comes along is a plus.”

Kehlani immediately began to receive hate for being pregnant with her boyfriend’s baby. Many people support the idea of someone being queer but as soon as they get into a heterosexual relationship, then the hate begins. Now that Kehlani is having a baby with her boyfriend and not only being in a relationship with a man, she is also facing major backlash.

Model Slick Woods was faced with similar hate when she announced her pregnancy while also identifying as queer.

“If you’re the kind of person whose first thought is to question how a woman can be pregnant when she’s attracted to women, you’re actively participating in bi-erasure.”

Bi-erasure is the tendency to ignore, remove, falsify, or reexplain evidence of bisexuality in history, the news media, etc. In its most extreme form, bisexual erasure can include the belief that bisexuality simply does not exist.
