Review of Democratic National Convention 2020

Lia Ghirardi, Reporter

What happened at the Democratic National Convention last week? On day 2 of the convention, Joe Biden was nominated for presidency on the Democratic side. The convention took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was shown virtually across the United States.

Thank you very, very much from the bottom of my heart.” He accepted the nomination saying, “Here and now, I give you my word: If you entrust me with the presidency, I will draw on the best of us, not the worst. I will be an ally of the light, not the darkness.” Out of 3,979 delegates, Biden needed 1,991 votes for nomination and he met that vote count.

In Biden’s acceptance speech, he brings up many different topics. One being the Corona Virus. Biden says the first thing he will do as president is get control of COVID. He says that he has a plan in place to solve this – a plan that will implement a national strategy that he has had planned since March. “…we’ll do what we should of done from the very beginning.” Another topic he brought up frequently throughout his speech is our current president Donald Trump. Biden continuously stated how he believes that President Trump is not fit to remain in office for another term. He points out what he believes Trump has done wrong for our country. “Is that the American you want?” Biden says in his acceptance speech.

What else will Joe do if he wins the election? Yes, he is secured to represent the Democratic side for presidency, but what will he do to lock in the spot as President? Joe Biden’s campaign includes wanting to solve problems we have in today’s world. Joe Biden’s 25-minute acceptance speech was the final speech of the convention. It was a speech which addressed the Trump administration – failure to address the coronavirus epidemic, increased racism, the failure to address the economic downturn, and climate change. He stated, “The current president has cloaked America in darkness for much too long — too much anger, too much fear, too much division. Here and now, I give you my word: If you entrust me with the presidency, I will draw on the best of us, not the worst. I’ll be an ally of the light, not the darkness.”  This narrative was repeated throughout the four day convention – Biden is a good man; Trump is a bad man; and with Biden’s leadership – the country will overcome this season of darkness in America.

Other democratic politicians spoke at the convention as well. One being Kamala Harris running alongside Biden as Vice President. She also speaks out about the problems in our country. Another being former First Lady Michelle Obama who stated, “Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country.”
