Chicago Hits 500th Homicide on Labor Day

Kayla Wiggins, Reporter

Chicago has surpassed its 500th homicide just 9 months into 2016, the deadliest year in just two decades. In comparison to other big cities like Los Angeles and New York, Chicago makes the top of the list, with more homicides than the two cities combined thus far.

It seems holiday weekends are the worst for murder.  Just on Father’s Day weekend of this year, there were 12 murders; the youngest victim of those 12 murders was a 16-year old. There are approximately 82 shootings every week. One week in August, there were 8 gun-related homicides and 64 non-fatal shootings.
Ironically, Chicago has strict gun laws; 60% of the guns that were used in shootings were purchased out-of-state.  Some people in Chicago cross the border, fill their gym bags with illegal guns  from guns shows, then they go back to Chicago and sell the guns to gangs.
Surprisingly, Chicago is not the homicide capital. New Orleans, St. Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, and Newark all have higher murder rates than Chicago.
