On Wednesday, February 7, Nancy Pelosi, the House Minority Leader, gave the longest recorded speech since at least 1909, when Missouri representative Champ Clark spoke for over five hours. Pelosi was protesting a budget deal raising spending caps (limits on how much the government can spend on a particular issue), seeing as it never mentioned problems with illegal immigrants and DACA. She proposed the Dream Act, which offers citizenship to undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as children, but Paul Ryan has avoided responding to this proposal. Ryan has reportedly made statements supporting an immigration reform bill that supports Dreamers, but Drew Hammill, Nancy Pelosi’s spokesperson, didn’t seem convinced. “Speaker Ryan needs to make a real commitment to act and stop hiding behind the President,” Hammill said. “It’s time to get the job done.”
