Giving Up Too Much?

Giving Up Too Much?

James Force, Reporter

After numerous trade rumors and an abundance of eagle-eyed coverage, it’s official…Christian McCaffrey has been traded. The 49ers beat out their NFC west rival, the Los Angeles Rams, trading a 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick, and two 4th round picks, the last of which Kyle Shanahan called, “A bonus,” to keep him off the Rams roster. Now it sounds like a match made in heaven…but did the 49ers give up too much for the running back?

Now to just call Christian McCaffrey a running back is disrespectful. He is the most recent back to have a 1000-yard rushing and 1000-yard receiving season and for a moment, was thought of as the best back in football. If McCaffrey any normal running back, while still being amazing, the 49ers would have given up way too much too. Running back longevity is really what decreases the value and the ability to replace the position with mild difficulty, but McCaffery’s unmatched skill to receive at the position combined with his extreme athleticism makes this trade seem extremely worth it, especially for a team who has struggled out the gate, and needs something to put them over the hump.

From a team standpoint, it’s even more beneficial for the 49ers, pairing the ultra-athletic, hybrid player that is Deebo Samuel with McCaffery will almost always have the defense on their heels. If the players weren’t scary enough, McCaffery gets to be coached by Kyle Shanahan, who has brought back something football has been lacking recently, an effective, run-heavy offense based on motion and disguising plays. In this offense, McCaffery should easily be able to revert to his 1000-yard receiving and rushing season. Barring any injury, it would seem that the Niners picking up McCaffery might put them right back into Super Bowl contention.
