With the release of “Rocketman” a rockumentary on the life of Elton John, I started thinking about which of his songs were my favorite.  Elton John is one of the most consequential artists of the past 52 years. His unique mix of sounds truly changed the music industry. As the decades pass, legendary artists like Elton are being forgotten, but thankfully newer generations are getting to know the legends through blockbuster movies like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman”. As rappers and pop singers get more popular, the most brilliant music of the 20th century is being left behind. Personally, I think that Elton John is one of the best artists of all time. Rating my favorite songs isn’t easy because they are all fantastic, but in my opinion these are the best:

1. Honky Cat- Honky Cat is catchy, it has strong blues influence and and a hint of jazz. The lyrics are mellow and laid back as it is a satire on the 70’s music industry. The melody in general is upbeat and positive.
2. I’m Still Standing- Not only is this song energetic, but the backstory is truly powerful and inspiring. He is talking to those who hurt him and put him down in the past and how he overcame everything and is doing better than ever. The song is lively and has great background vocals, honestly just making you want to dance.
3. Daniel- Daniel is a slower paced song but that doesn’t make it any less good as these other songs. It’s nice and calm and makes you feel tranquil, the percussion fits well with the song.
4. Bennie and the Jets- This is definitely one of the fan favorites out of these five. It has an upbeat tempo and good piano solos. Makes you feel nostalgic, even if you didn’t grow up in the 70’s.
5. Pinball Wizard- The execution of the way he played the piano so passionately brings another sense of life and energy to the song. It’s fast paced and it seems like he has something to say, giving it more depth.

These are only a few songs to get the taste of Elton John’s amazing music, there are so many more fantastic songs and albums to hear!
