Tupac Shakur’s Killer Finally Arrested

A wall dedicated to the memory of US rapper Tupac Shakur is seen on May 26, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.
Twenty years after his death, Tupac still reigns. Other rappers have succeeded him in stardom, and promotional efforts around Tupac have been haphazard, but the artist who died at age 25 on September 13, 1996, in Las Vegas, maintains a hold that is among the most enduring in recent times. / AFP / VALERIE MACON / TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Shaun TANDON, 20 years on, Tupac reigns as potent global force (Photo credit should read VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty Images)

Tupac Amaru Shakur, also known as 2Pac, was an American rapper – one of the most influential and successful of all time. Tupac was born on June 16th, 1971, in Brooklyn, NY, and was raised by his mother Afeni Shakur, a founding member of the Black Panther Party, an African-American movement with the goal of improving the overall conditions of civil rights for black citizens. Tupac was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting at age 25 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 7th, 1996, and died in the hospital on September 13th, 1996. After three decades of searching for Tupac’s killer, an arrest has finally been made.

Duane Keith Davis, a member of the California gang known as the South Side Compton Crips, has been charged with the first-degree murder of Tupac Shakur. As far back as 1998, Duane Keith Davis was telling a cable channel that he was in the passenger seat of the car when passengers in the back fired the shots that killed Tupac including one with BET. “Over the last five years, we’ve conducted countless interviews and corroborated numerous facts that were not only consistent with the crime scene on the night of the incident but also corroborated and were consistent with the sequence of events that night,” Jason Johansson, a Las Vegas police homicide lieutenant said.

The decades-old case gained focus in 2018 because Davis was talking about it publicly with no shame. This was likely their only chance to finally take this case and successfully solve this case and bring forth a criminal charge after all these years of searching.
