Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, professionally known as Cardi B, is a 26-year-old rapper with a controversial past of stripping and drugs. Cardi B became famous after her song ‘Bodak Yellow’ hit top 10 in the charts back in 2017. Before Cardi B was famous, she worked as a stripper in the Bronx. Recently, a 3-year-old video resurfaced about the star where she claimed she tricked men into going back to a hotel with her, drugged them then robbed them. Within hours of the clip emerging, the star went onto social media to defend herself. “So I’m seeing on social media that an Instagram Live I did 3 years ago has popped back up. A Live where I talked about things I had to do in my past right or wrong that I felt I needed to do to make a living.”

Throughout the post, Cardi goes on to say many other artists have a past which they are not proud of and included herself into that group. “I’m part of a hip hop culture where you can talk about where you come from talk about the wrong things you had to do to get where you are. There are rappers that glorify murder, violence, drug, and robbing. Crimes they feel they had to do to survive… I never glorified the things I brought up in my music because I’m not proud of it and feel a responsibility to not glorify it. I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options… I was blessed to have been able to rise from that, but so many women have not. Whether or not they were poor choices at the time I did what I had to do to survive.”

Cardi also addressed that the men she was talking about in the video were men she knew, and they were “conscious, willing, and aware.” After all these events happened this week Cardi had both many supporting and many angry fans. People compared her to Bill Cosby who went to jail for drugging and assaulting women. With all negative tweets people added #survivingcardib referring to Surviving R. Kelly, many have been posting about how what Cardi did was not okay but because she is a woman people feel it’s okay. “Bill Cosby and Cardi B are both criminals in my eyes. Only difference, one is female and popular in the media right now. She deserves the same treatment and punishment as him,” via Twitter.
