The Beloved John Witherspoon Dies

The legendary actor and comedian, John “Pops” Witherspoon passed away on October 29, 2019 at the age of 77.  John’s memory will live on with his wife Angela and his two sons, JD and Alexander. His family released a statement stating,”We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal,’ but he was a huge deal to us.”

He began his stand-up comedy career and acting in the late 1970’s. He starred in numerous films like Vampire in Brooklyn and Little Nicky; although, he was best known for his role as Ice Cube’s grumpy dad in the iconic breakout hit Friday as well as it’s sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next. He was also known for his role as “Pops” on The Wayans Bros.

Even with his busy film career, stand up comedy still remained important in John’s life. Prior to his passing, he still performed regularly and even had more dates coming up that sadly will not continue.

Many of his costars have spoken out since his death to share their condolences, including his TV costar Marlon Wayans, calling him “the funniest sweetest wisest humblest loving man.” Ice Cube spoke out stating, “I’m devastated over the passing of John Witherspoon,” and “Life won’t be as funny without him.”

John brought many enjoyable moments and laughs to everybody, whether it was through a TV screen or in person and for that, people will forever be grateful. John’s legacy and life will continue to spread throughout and continue to inspire many others.
