The Tragic Death of Mr. Peanut

The Tragic Death of Mr. Peanut

Brendon Davis, Beat Investagator

Tragedy struck January 22, 2020, when Mr. Peanut, the 104-year-old Planters Peanut mascot, died so suddenly while saving his friends. This was a set up for an ad in the upcoming Superbowl 54. Mr. Peanut is (was?) a popular mascot for Planters Peanuts.

The mascot was made in 1916 with a contest that was won by an Italian Schoolboy, Antonio Gentile, who won the title of a boy who made Mr. Peanut, but also $5. From there it had a little touch-up job and became the official mascot for the next 104 years.

A tweet mourning the death
Meaningless joke made by a popular user

Upon his death declaration, Twitter went wild. #RIPeanut was trending quickly after the post and many memes came out of it. People with peanut allergies joked that they were glad that he was gone, and people even mourned it. Many of the jokes made were pointless and didn’t make sense but were quite funny. During the Superbowl, his funeral will air. This ultimately is just a marketing ploy, and it will be interesting to see how his whole death will play out along with what will happen after the Superbowl. Although, The mascot will be missed for the time being.
