The Downfall of the Pac-12

The Downfall of the Pac-12

James Force, Sports Editor

In June, huge news broke about the Pac-12 – USC and UCLA are leaving for the Big Ten. USC, one of the biggest teams in college sports, broke the news with this announcement, leaving most people to wonder… who’s moving next?

Now, most people are speculating about schools like Oregon and Washington being the next ones to leave. This speculation didn’t stop Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff from stating, “Listen, I think if schools would have left for the Big Ten, they would have left for the Big Ten already… I’m very focused on things that are in my control.” The commissioner doubled down on this in July, guaranteeing that no other teams would be leaving the Pac-12. He stated this knowing that the Big Ten or the Big 12 were recruiting schools like Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah. Kliavkoff said the Pac-12 welcomes the review of UCLA’s move and hasn’t ruled out the school remaining in the league.

The Pac-12 is also trying to negotiate its media rights deal. “I talk to our presidents and chancellors and athletic directors all the time; we have conversations about this,” Kliavkoff said. “Everyone is committed to working together to get a great grant of rights, following a good media rights deal, and I take people at their word.” The media negotiations were sped up because of the departure of USC and UCLA. If any more schools leave and the Pac-12 doesn’t add any, we could be seeing the start of the downfall of the Pac-12.
