High schools around Arizona have been competing for the state championship in football. Four Tucson schools represented our city in the finals and semifinals for the AIA state championship including Salpointe Catholic in 6A, Sabino in 3A, and Mica Mountain and Canyon Del Oro in 4A.

4A, 5A, and 6A had their semifinals on November 24th, and Salpointe Catholic represented Tucson in the 6A Bracket. They lost to the Saguaro Sabercats, a Phoenix team that was in the open bracket, but after losing games fell into 6A. The score was 42-24.

In the 4A bracket semifinals, Canyon Del Oro and Mica Mountain played against each other. Canyon Del Oro took home the win with a score of 23-7. CDO and Mica Mountain are not strangers since they had faced off in a regular season game, with a score of 17-15, which CDO won. Canyon del Oro went on to play against Yuma Catholic in the 4A finals the following Friday, December 1st. Both teams had a 13-0 record, making it the only state championship game between two undefeated teams. And with a 35-27 win, CDO took home the state title. This is the first time since 2009 that they took home the state championship and had a perfect 14-0 record.

Sabino, the 4th seed in the 3A finals, played on the 25th and came out victorious with a 68-46 win against the 3rd seed, Paradise Honors. This is the first time they’ve won a football championship since 1988.

Tucson was well-represented in the state championships!
