Couple Spotlight: Dinorah Lagarda and Nick Ponds

Couple Spotlight: Dinorah Lagarda and Nick Ponds

Dinorah and Nick, a basketball power couple.

Dinorah and Nick are both on our varsity basketball teams. They both share a number in the 20’s – Dinorah’s being #24 and Nick’s #21. Dinorah plays the position of point guard, while Nick plays small forward. Dinorah has been playing basketball since she was 3 years old, same with Nick. They’ve both played for Sahuaro every year they’ve been here. After graduation, Nick plans to play college basketball but is undecided as to where. Dinorah is going to GCU for college and then hopes to coach somewhere.

Their relationship actually started with basketball. Nick tells the story of how they got together, “We were playing on the same club basketball team, and we’ve known each other since 7th grade. Once we got to Sahuaro, we were both playing freshman ball and then we started talking more. Then sophomore year, in person, that’s when we actually started dating.”

Now, basketball isn’t the only thing they have in common. They’re both in Student Council as well. Dinorah’s been in it all 4 years and is the Student Body Vice President. Meanwhile, Nick just joined last year, yet he’s the Senior Class President.

Now you may be wondering, how has a couple stayed together practically all throughout high school? Well, they have some advice for you.

Dinorah: “Communication.  Literally that, just communication. Don’t let other people affect your relationship. It has to be done between you…Don’t let other people have an influence on your relationship. Cause if you really like the person for who they are, then it doesn’t matter what other people think.”

Nick: “Communication is a big part. Always lifting each other up, reassuring each other…Don’t fight over little things and make a bigger thing than it really is. And if you have doubts in your mind, always communicate them. If you don’t like something, tell your partner.”

Now for a throwback, let’s hear how meeting the parents went.

Dinorah: “It was very natural, like they already loved him and had been kinda plotting for us to get together before we even started talking. So they already like liked him.”

Nick: “It was very awkward…I was nervous…She didn’t talk at all.”

Speaking of the past, what are their favorite memories of each other?

Nick: “Favorite memory?…. Probably our first date when she was nervous and she couldn’t eat her chicken tenders at Dave and Buster’s.”

Dinorah: “My quinceañera.”

However, both would agree that their trip to Disneyland is a great memory.  “That, or celebrating our anniversaries. First year, second year.”  Nick chimes in, “Nah I think our first time going out of state together for a trip. Made it to the family trips.”

When it comes to couples, Dinorah and Nick have a relationship to admire.
