  • In January 2019, a documentary called Knock Down the House, which focused on female democrats, features Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who showed that she was the only one to win her election. Her campaign was featured on the cover of the June 2018 edition of The Indypendent. Otherwise, she was barely printed until her actual win.

  • Elon Musk founded SpaceX company and became CEO of Tesla a year after it was launched. His goals include helping decrease global warming through sustainable energy and he wants to establish a human colony on Mars. Musk in 2019 announced the Cybertruck to help with his fight using sustainable energy.

  • Montero Lamar Hill (Lil Nas X) is 20 years old and broke the internet with his hit country and rap single “Old Town Road” which was Diamond Certified in November 2019. The rapper came out as gay in June of 2019 and was the first to do so while having a number one record. He has won two MTV Video Music Awards, been nominated for six Grammys and is the first openly LGBTQ artist to win a Country Music Association award

  • Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers, formally known as Brie Larson, is an American actress who starred as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers in 2019’s Captain Marvel which marked Marvel’s first female lead film. Larson agreed to take the role to help empower young girls around the world. Captain Marvel grossed $1 billion worldwide and starred in Avengers: Endgame which grossed $2.79 billion worldwide.

  • In late 2018, Thunberg started her student strike for the climate. Thunberg said she first got her ideas of strikes when there were school shootings in America, and kids refused to go back to school. People suggested having students host a strike. No one was really interested, so Thunberg had her strike by herself. Greta Thunberg was named Times ‘Person of the Year’ of 2019.

  • Colin Kaepernick played for the 49’ers, and in 2016 started to kneel during the national anthem as a stand against racial injustice. Kaepernick got many mixed reactions from his protests. After the season, he became a free agent, although he wasn’t signed. He filed a grievance against the NFL, but in February 2019, he withdrew it

  • Former first lady Michelle Obama released her book ‘Becoming’ and got astounding reviews. Although she is no longer First Lady, she still uses her power to help empower young girls around the World, and is a huge advocate of Greta Thunberg

  • Taylor Swift has sold more than 50 million albums. She’s won 10 Grammys, an Emmy, 6 Guinness World Records, and is the most awarded at the American Music Awards. In 2019, Billboard placed Swift at number 8 on its list of ‘Greatest of all Time Artists’

  • Meghan Markle was married into the royal family as the first American in the family. Her and her husband Prince Harry have a son named Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. The two broke many traditions at their wedding and started to change age old traditions

  • Jeff Bezos is the CEO of Amazon, which has been the first company to market cap on $1 trillion dollars. Blue Origin, which Bezos has interests in, has plans of beginning commercial suborbital human spaceflight in 2019.
