Zuckerberg explaining just what Meta is set out to do.

Sierra Ayers, Reporter

Mark Zuckerberg, who we all know from his company Facebook, has come out with the rebranding of his famous social media app. Although the name and logo have completely changed, Zuckerberg says that the intent of their company has remained the same. “We are still the company that designs technology around people,” says Zuckerberg in his latest Instagram live.

During said Instagram Live, he described just what the Metaverse will come to be, and I’m here to sum it up for you. Though, there are also various videos that can assist you in understanding just what this Meta thing is in detail, straight from Zuckerberg’s mouth.

Now let’s talk metaverse.

The general definition of a metaverse is a digital reality that combines aspects of social media, online gaming, augmented reality, virtual reality, and cryptocurrencies to allow users to interact virtually. It is a virtual world where users can share experiences and interact in real-time within simulated scenarios.

The metaverse idea is credited to be invented by Neal Stephenson’s 1992 cyberpunk novel, Snow Crash, where he envisions and describes 3D buildings and interactions in a separate reality.

Meta’s specific metaverse coincides with virtual reality itself, as it goes hand in hand with Quest, also owned by the newly branded Meta. The metaverse is simply described by Zuckerberg as a place to virtually meet, work and play using a VR headset, glasses, or your device. It is opening up a separate part of virtual reality to adapt to one’s routine lifestyle. Whether it be work, school, hanging out, or any social event you can think of, Meta wants to create a virtual space to connect you there with others.

Now although there is all this talk of the metaverse and a new, totally immersive world, it is just that. Talk. There is not even a beta run of the metaverse, and everything Zuckerberg spoke about is hypothetical. Nothing has been done, and nothing has been finalized.

Zuckerberg said that “the best way to understand the metaverse is to experience it yourself, but it’s a little tough because it doesn’t fully exist yet.”

Even Microsoft wants to take a stab at the same concept, although they have not officially announced their plan of what they would do differently. Now here are some of the worries about this so-called “metaverse.”

The biggest issue of this new idea concept pertains to the thought, will it really happen? Not only would this new idea get Zuckerberg closer to having a monopoly on technology, but there is no certainty if it’ll even work. Many of the details discussed in the presentation were less realistic and more speculative.

There has even been controversy around this new name, ‘Meta’ as time goes on. Meta Company is a Chicago-based tech firm that has sued Facebook for its use of the name. After Facebook attempted to buy the name from the company and was denied, Nate Skulic said, “Facebook decided to commit trademark infringement and call themselves Meta. They couldn’t buy us, so they tried to buy us by force of media. We shouldn’t be surprised by these actions – from a company that continually says one thing and does another.” They still continue to use the name though, and nothing has yet come from the lawsuit.

Although some people are excited about the prospect of such an advanced concept, many others are skeptical and downright against the thought.

Is Facebook trying to cover up its past mistakes with a new company name and logo? Is a metaverse even realistic with today’s technology? That is all up to you to decide, and at the end of the day, all we have is speculation. What we know for sure is that Facebook is no longer the name of the social media platform and company owned by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, Meta is. Hopefully, Meta can provide us with what Facebook couldn’t.
